The Complexity
Sciences Winter School will take place at
ISCTE
- Lisbon University Institute, between the 5th and the 10th
January 2009. This edition will be organized by John
Symons (University
of Texas at El Paso), Rui
Lopes and Jorge
Louçã (both from ISCTE - Lisbon University
Institute), around the subject "Social structures in
communication networks".
The Winter School will be the first event
associated to the new International
Doctoral Program in Complexity Sciences, allowing to present
the new academic program scientific goals and organization.
The Winter School
will propose an interdisciplinary approach for the study of
appearing new social structures supported by communication
networks, such as Internet. Different points of view and scientific
contexts will be applied to the study of social dynamic structures in
communication networks. This approach associates the scientific domains
of philosophy of science, computer networks, social networks, and
social simulation. Specifically, computer networks sessions will
concern mainly the hardware and software design of networks, social
network theory will allow network analysis from the social sciences
point of view, and social simulation will provide tools for models
design, hypotheses test and validation. Philosophy of science will
discuss the validity of this interdisciplinary context and the
relevance of focusing research on the new communication networks.
.
Target audience
The
sessions are intended for faculty, graduate students, master and PhD
students, researchers and others who would like to gain an
understanding of the crossed-perspective of philosophy of science,
computer networks, social networks, and social simulation.
.
Closing workshop
The
Winter School will end with an open workshop, the 2nd ICC Workshop on
Complexity in Social Sciences, that will take place at ISCTE Saturday
10th January. The workshop will take all day and will include the
presentation of research papers, conclusions of the school and a final
discussion.
.
Time schedule
The
Winter School will have 2 sessions every day during 1 week, the first
session between 17h30 and 19h and the second session from 19h30 to 21h.
This time schedule will allow working people to come to all sessions.
It will allow also non-portuguese
participants to use the morning and early afternoon free moments to
interact with local research teams at the university.
.
Speakers
Please check also the list of speakers that will participate in the 2nd ICC
Workshop on
Complexity in Social Sciences (10th January 2009)
that will end the 2009 edition of the Winter School.
..
Registration
Registration
deadline is December 31. To register please send an email to "idpcc dot
dcti at iscte dot pt" asking to attain the winter school, and informing
